Consort of Gemshorns
Grassmann, Leipzig

The Gemshorn is a medieval shepards flute. It was made from animals horns. The use of cowhorn is in fact not a modern makeshift solution as one could think considering the name of the instrument. We know that the material was commonly used already in the early 15th century.
In historic times however the Gemshorn was not built as Consort in in different sizes. Insofar the use of a whole family of Treble, Alto, Tenor and Bass Gemshorn could be labeled as anachronism. But it is a likeable one..

Gemshorn from Sebastian Virdung:
"Musica getutscht" 1511.
